Nunatsiavut, which translated into English means “Our Beautiful Land”, is the homeland of the Labrador Inuit and the first Inuit region in Canada to achieve self-government. The territory includes the five Inuit communities of Nain, Hopedale, Postville, Makkovik and Rigolet. Nunatsiavut Government represents over 7,000 Beneficiaries of the Constitutionally-protected Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement. It has many of the responsibilities and rights of other governments, such as planning for sustainable economic development, protecting the preserving Inuit culture and implementing social programs on behalf of Beneficiaries. Today, over 500 people are employed with the Nunatsiavut Government in a variety of role.
